Club Coaching: Beginner Course: September 2017

WHEN and WHERE?

Four sessions:

  1. Wed, Sep 6th, 6:30-7:30pm, Witham Town Centre
  2. Mon, Sep 11th, 6:30-7:30pm, Witham Town Centre
  3. (to be decided)
  4. (to be decided)

Sessions 3 and 4 will taken place in parkland/forest, during the second half of September. The exact time and date will be decided after discussing with the people who turn up for the first two sessions.

COST

£2 to cover cost of materials. Anyone attending all four sessions will get a free entry to a SOS event, worth approx. £8.

DETAILS

While aimed at members of a running club, this four-part course is suitable for all speeds and levels of fitness. It will take you from "I'm hopeless at navigation" to the confidence to enter a real event.

You do not need any special equipment, it will be supplied. Note that, because we are running on the roads, this course is open to adults only.

Organiser – Darren Cook (darren [at] dcook.org). Please let me know if you plan to attend, so the correct number of maps and other equipment can be prepared. Though if you do just turn up on the day, you will be still be welcome! This four-part course is the last part of my L2 coaching qualification, so your help and support is very much appreciated!

Session #1 of 4 (Wed, Sep 6th, 6:30-7:30pm)

Meet: Big studio on 2nd floor of DS Fitness Experience, Newland Shopping Centre (opposite the The White Hart).

Go straight up. Changing facilities are available.

Parking at either Tesco (free, closes at 8pm), or Newlands Drive (£1.40)

Fee: £2 for materials (anyone attending all four sessions will get a free race entry for the next SOS event)

The first half hour will be a bit of theory: getting to know a map and its symbols, the compass, how orienteering event works, etc.

Then, a quick warm-up and we will be outside navigating our way around the streets of Witham, first as a group jog, then individually at your own pace. The aim is to get used to the map, and build the confidence of always knowing where you are on it.

Wear normal running shoes.

This will be the least physical of the four sessions, so if you wanted to go home sweaty, or log some miles, please do an extra run afterwards!

Session #2 of 4 (Mon, Sep 11th, 6:30-7:30pm)

Meet outside this time, under the gym, opposite the White Hart.

Fee: £2 for materials (anyone attending all four sessions will get a free race entry for the next SOS event)

After a warm-up, we start with a recap of the exercises from the previous session, then move on to a technically more challenging exercise in pairs. We will finish with a 25 minute "score" event, where you can run at your own pace, trying to visit as many places on the map as you can.

Wear normal running shoes. There should still be plenty of daylight, but we are on the roads, so high-viz clothes wouldn't hurt. Bring a pen (but we will have some spares if you forget).

Session #3 of 4 (Date TBD, in September)

Where: TBD

Fee: £2 for materials (anyone attending all four sessions will get a free race entry for the next SOS event)

We switch from urban to forest orienteering (though, most likely, we will be in parkland), and as well as learning more map symbols, we will learn how to compare routes, and how to balance speed with accuracy.

Wear: trail/orienteering shoes if you have them, otherwise normal running shoes. Full leg cover is highly recommended.

Session #4 of 4 (Date TBD, in September)

Where: TBD

Fee: £2 for materials (anyone attending all four sessions will get a free race entry for the next SOS event)

Again off-road, and this time we will be looking at "point features", which require accurate navigation. We will finish with a short, but realistic course, giving you the chance to use all the skills learnt over the four weeks.

Wear: trail/orienteering shoes if you have them, otherwise normal running shoes. Full leg cover is highly recommended.
