Summer Series Event 4
Great Notley Country Park
Thursday 5th July 2012
Results
True to 'Summer Series' a balmy evening in Great Notley Country Park, with wild flowers blooming and birds singing; disturbed only by 30 orienteers trampling through the high vegetation and arriving looking a little overheated at the finish! Requests from some competitors to avoid the compulsory hill climb up to the big bird next year will surely be ignored by the planner. This year we were able to include the addition of a second lower hill at the north end of the park, a small but interesting young wooded area. Even some experienced orienteers were caught out here (by the slightly evil planner and perhaps wishful thinking) that control 12 (nr 42) on the yellow course was control 7 (nr 46) on the green. Both were on a fence but that was where the similarity ended, nr 46 being 60m further across the plateau through the trees. There were one or two other controls where people reported finding it difficult to spot the small control squares, so precise navigation and checking control descriptions is clearly advisable. I did try to avoid 'hiding' the controls but clearly not always successfully for which I apologise. It was good to hear some extensive discussion after the event over route choices.
Many thanks to John Collyer for helping with the map update and planning control advice, Nancy and David for the first aid cover and everybody who helped collect controls and pack away the start/finish area at the end of the evening. Much appreciated!
