Organiser – Jeff Patteson jeffrey.patteson@sky.com

Hylands is one of our more unusual areas in which to stage an event and I think Chris’ planning utilised that to good effect to give a little challenge both mentally and physically. This event at Hylands Park was my first time organising an orienteering event and Sarah and Chris have been patient, understanding and very willing to offer their assistance; I am most grateful to them both. I must additionally thank David Lumby and Julie Laver for their invaluable advice. I received an overwhelming response from our SOS members, who rallied to volunteer for all of the roles required to stage the event. I owe them all my deepest gratitude for making my job all the easier, being able to rely on their generosity and experience. Unfortunately, we were faced with a few technical issues that resulted in splits not being printed and I would like to thank all competitors for their understanding, especially when a queue formed at download whilst attempts were made to rectify. I must also thank Paul Lowe and Rod Mansel for all their assistance with the SI Kit and in ensuring we were able to obtain accurate results.

Planner – Chris Childs

The nature of the terrain changes quickly at this time of year and the wooded areas were less overgrown than when the courses were planned however when setting out the controls in the dark late on Saturday night I has not expecting to find myself nearly up to my knees in mud. Rapidly a warning for those on the Blue and Brown courses was produced and I don’t think anybody returned encrusted in mud! My thanks big time to Sarah Mansell and David Lumby for all their help in planning and setting out the controls. I hope all enjoyed their run.

Controller – Sarah Mansel

It was a pleasure to work with Chris and Jeff to put on this event, and I think that most participants enjoyed their courses on the day. I’m glad that Chris followed my advice about putting some long legs across the park on the TD5 courses; as it is quite easy to be slightly off on a bearing and head for the wrong copse, so it made the courses slightly more challenging.

There were some technical issues with the SI kit on the day, because there was a mixture of new and old controls which had not all been set up in the same way. However, the results were sorted out on Sunday evening thanks to Rod and Paul. The reason there were no splits printed on the day was due to a battery issue, completely unrelated to the SI issues, and I hope that people weren’t too disappointed that these were not available on the day.
