Directions / Parking
Parking in the supermarket car park has been agreed by the store manager of Morrisons (immediately adjacent to The Flyer pub) in Dickens Place, Chelmsford, CM1 4UX. Please avoid using the pub’s car park, as there is limited space and ANPR is in use. Car drivers may want to be aware of the numerous speed & traffic signal cameras on the main roads through Chelmsford, especially if approaching from the south.
The Flyer pub is about 2 miles from Chelmsford rail & bus stations if walking. The C2 bus (amongst others) stops close to The Flyer. Anyone considering this option is advised to visit https://www.firstbus.co.uk/essex
Map / Terrain
Open Orienteering Map style, 1:10,000 (long & short). Controls will be fire hydrant ‘H’ signs. There will be a small number of updates made to the open-source map, however participants must be prepared for the existence of minor discrepancies. Note that schools are marked in pink and are out of bounds; any fences marked on the map should be considered uncrossable.
Please note that the map which will be visible on your phone will not show the updates and out of bounds markings, these are only shown on the paper map.
Course Information
This is a score event with Long and Short courses using the same map but with different time limits - 60 minutes for long & 40 minutes for short. Exceeding these times
will collect a penalty of 10 points per minute (or part thereof). Controls may be 'collected' in any order and are assigned different points depending on location. Generally, controls close to the start have a lower value and increase in value further away from the start. Controls 1-10 are valued at 10 points, 11-20 at 20 points, 21-30 at 30 points and 31 onwards at 40 points. It is very unlikely that anyone on the long course will be able to visit all the controls.
Download the course onto the Maprun app by clicking on ‘Select Event' in the app and following the menu path UK > Essex>Chelmsford Oct24.The course maps will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at Registration on the night. (Note – you do not need the PIN number to run using a Garmin watch). There are no written answers required when using MapRun. Your correct 'punches' and result (incl penalties) will be automatically computed after you finish.
If you are unable or prefer not to use MapRun, you are still welcome to take part by completing the control sheet with pen or pencil (N.B. this is a much slower method). With this approach, timing will be manually by a traditional clock, and written answers will be checked as per previous events. Please bring your own pen/ pencil.

Safety Notes
Participation is at your own risk. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
Bring clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather conditions.
As with any urban orienteering which requires participants to cross roads, you are asked to take due care and pay attention at all times. It will not be necessary to cross roads with a limit above 30mph, however not all drivers observe this speed, especially on Broomfield Road, so please take care. Roads with a 40/ 60mph speed limit are out of bounds.
There is street lighting on all roads within the built up areas, but not on all footpaths and a very small number of controls at the edges of the map. Footpaths may be very dark, narrow, uneven/ muddy and may not be frequently used by pedestrians. If the lack lighting is likely to cause you concern, please consider this as part of your route choice assessment.
Please do not leave the mapped area, even if you know that roads link up. Most of these routes have been identified as out of bounds, so using them will make the run non-competitive.
There will be no need to enter watercourses.
Note that sunset is expected to be at 18:32. Reflective, high visibility clothing is strongly recommended. Please bring a torch to assist with map reading and consider using running lights for safety.
There may be dog walkers, cyclists, scooters or residents on pavements, footpaths and Broomfield Road cycleways (sometimes heading in the wrong direction) – be aware and give them priority.
Miscellaneous
The event will form part of HAVOC/SOS Twilight 'O' series League open to all. Points will be awarded based on your score as computed by MapRun and then adjusted using an age/gender handicap system. Exceeding the time limit will incur a 10 point penalty per minute, noting that this is effectively 15 points per minute for the short course, once the overall score is multiplied by 150%. Best 3 results from the 4-event series will count. Full results will be emailed and published on the SOS and HAVOC websites. Scores for all courses can be found at https://results.maprun.net/
