Map / Terrain

Writtle Forest, now in private hands, was a medieval Royal Forest - a mixture of woodland and open plains. It has survived, largely unchanged, for hundreds of years and features prominent ancient wood banks which separate the boundaries of the individual woods or "springs" within the forest. Parsons Spring (also known as Parsons Wood) has numerous shallow but steep-sided pits where sand and gravel was once exploited, probably for hoggin for use on the paths of Writtle Park estate.
