Thanks for running my courses. I hope the light shower didn't inconvenience you. To those of you who felt that your course was affected by the summer undergrowth, I offer the traditional July planner's defence - you should have seen the bits I didn't send you through!
Regression analysis of last year's results suggested that the handicaps offered were about 30% too generous, so I tried to make the courses a bit longer. I was happy with the lengths for the Short and Long courses, but I would have liked the Medium to be 500m or so longer. In practice I couldn't find a way of adding the distance without sending you to the same places you went on the other courses, so it stayed on the short side.
This must be about the 25th running of the Stragglers' Relays (if you know the exact number, please let me know). The format has been evolving very slowly over the years, in fact I can only remember one small change to the format in the last 12 events. In recent years it has become traditional for the trophy to be won by a team called 'This Little CHIGgy'. This year they decided that they would finish in 6th place to encourage the others. Well done the Gardners!
Teams are handicapped based on age group and sex, roughly based on the expected minutes per km used as par speeds by the SE League. This year teams with big handicaps again did slightly better on average than those with small handicaps, so you can expect the handicaps to be a bit smaller or the courses to be a bit longer next year.
Team start times are between 11 a.m. and noon, according to handicap, so that the first past the post team will be the winners. Each team receives one Yellow, one Orange, and one Light Green map, so three members of the team set off at their start time leaving the fourth member to stay behind and worry about the team tactics going wrong. The maps are passed from team member to team member until four Yellow, three Orange, and two Light Green laps have been run (without, of course, anyone running the same course more than once). Establishing who runs which laps in which order is crucial to success. Anyone taking longer than expected on a lap can delay their team in two ways - firstly they will be late to start their next lap (each team is likely to have one poor member who runs continuously throughout the competition), and secondly because the person they hand the map over to will be starting later as well. Good for building team spirit.....
If all goes well, the results team will be able to keep up with the starters and finishers and a winners will be declared soon after 1 p.m.
