Organiser's Report

Little to report – everything ran smoothly, thanks to the usual teamwork from Stragglers, young and old, new and more experienced who all offered their help with little or no coercion! The usual ‘lessons learnt’ apply – always make sure that you have more helpers than the absolute minimum. The sharp frost resulted in one non-appearance due to burst pipes and one late arrival due to a very icy road. Hockley is a popular area for walkers, runners and dogs, as could be seen from the car park, and fortunately the limited disturbance of controls did not impact on anyone’s run. The weather and Clives’ courses were appreciated and commented on by many competitors. We hope to see you all at future SOS events (see the 1999 calendar on the back of these results). My thanks to all the helpers, Clive and Kevin for their efficient and unobtrusive work and Rochford District Council for their permission to use the area.

Planner's Report

A regular lesson from orienteering is that there is simply no substitute for experience. That applies to planning as much as it does to competition. Kevin's experience and help was truly invaluable. I hope that between us we gave most of you a good experience in a delightful woodland on a glorious December day. Some competitors on the short courses may have felt cheated by the short distances - or perhaps delighted by their quick times. I am afraid that having made a commitment to the location of start and finish, I was then restricted as to the length. I could offer the shorter courses without taking the courses beyond the ability of many of the competitors. Despite losing significant areas which were out of bounds, I was able to take advantage of the lowest bramble growth I have witnessed in Hockley and take some courses through parts not used in recent times. My thanks to my daughter Hazel who helped with putting out the controls and who pointed out that a control site with green and blue lines on the map could not be a ditch junction! Special thanks to Geoff and Jonathan Pye, Kevin and Alex Machin for helping to collect controls.

Controller’s Report

I think it only right that I should congratulate Clive on giving everybody a good day out. I only heard favourable comments of the courses, and plenty of people did come up and say how much they enjoyed them. Apologies to anyone on the short courses who felt their run was too brief, but the alternatives would have led to some very long times. My only disappointment was that there weren’t more people there, because the conditions were perfect, both the weather and the level of undergrowth in a wood renowned for its bramble and slippery paths. Clive made very good use of the area that was available, and in particular, did well to provide a blue course which was a challenge to most people without being unfair and without the need for second master maps. Many thanks to Steve and his team for their organisation, which went very smoothly, and also to Clive, who between them made my first time out as controller very straight forward and also very enjoyable.
