PLANNERS COMMENTS – Suzannah and Nicola Robertson

As this was the first event we have ever planned we found it quite a challenge, particularly because of the simple terrain it was hard to create challenging longer courses. The amount of work involved in planning is more than we had originally thought but we hope that everyone enjoyed their courses. There were only two complaints: one about the amount of undergrowth (sorry Jo!) and the other about the distance gap between the green and blue. The blue was originally too short so we introduced second master maps at a relatively late stage, and in so doing perhaps made it a bit too long relative to the green. Sorry! Thank you to everyone who helped us particularly Dad (Steve Robertson) and Andy Cordle, who were very patient with us.

ORGANISERS COMMENTS – Steve Robertson

Family relationships with teenage children are strained at best without the extra burden of planning and organising an Orienteering event. However, Suzy and Nicola produced courses, under the experienced guidance of Andy Cordle, that seemed to have been enjoyed all, despite the length of the Blue course! Apologies to the White Course competitors who thought they had a 1.25 km course from the notice on the registration car windscreen to find it had increased to 1.75 km by the time they reached the start. Moral – prepare everything before 06:00 am on the day of the event! Also, with hindsight we should have avoided the small path in the woodland on the White so that the course could have been fully negotiated by buggy. Thanks to Chelmsford Borough Council for use of Hylands Park and SOS club members for their usual goodnatured help on the day and flexibility to tackle any job, particularly the Junior club members. Also the amount of interest from members of the public who were in the park dog and children walking was encouraging and may introduce new members to local clubs.

CONTROLLERS COMMENTS - Andrew Cordle

his was a nice and easy event to control. Suzy and Nicola set courses of the right length (perhaps the Green could have been a bit longer) and standard within the constraints of the terrain and the somewhat ageing map - an excellent first effort from them both. Steve and his helpers made everything run smoothly, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
