Essex Stragglers Orienteering Society

New Years Novelty Event

Hylands Park, Chelmsford

1st January 2000

Welcome to the Stragglers' New Year's Novelty 2000 - "1000 Years of Orienteering"

This is a novelty progressive Norwegian handicap score event.

There is one course, with 20 controls. You must visit as many controls as you can, in the correct order, within 60 minutes. The course starts off at White standard, and the legs then get generally longer and harder.

The first 10 controls should be copied from this sheet before you start. You will find another map hanging from control no. 10, showing two possible locations of control 11. The correct location is indicated by the answer to a quiz question on 11th Century orienteering. Two answers - A and B - will be given, corresponding to the possible locations marked A and B on the map. If you can't work out the answer to the question, you may have to visit both locations before you find the next control. There will be no control marker at the incorrect site. There will be another map and a question on 12th Century orienteering at the next control site, and so on.

You will score one point for each correct punch, lose one point for each illegible or wrong punch, and lose one point for each minute (or part) over the 60 minutes.

Handicap points will be added based on your 2000 age class - M21 0 points, M18/20/35 1, M16/40/45 2, M14/50/55 3, M12/60 4, M10/65/70/75 5. Ws will get 2 more points than the corresponding M, and family groups will be assessed by the organiser.
