Organiser's Comments - Geraldine Russell 01206 322905.
The event went smoothly thanks to all the helpers who seemed to be much busier than me, the planners, Clive and Hazel Tant for putting in hours of work and especially the controller, Brian Daniel who came from HAVOC. Some reward for me was to have a good turnout and that most people seemed to enjoy their run. Peter Finch shadowed me to learn the ropes for organising a future event. I do hope he gleaned some useful knowledge from the experience albeit we spent most of the time chatting.
Planners' Report - Clive and Hazel Tant
The courses were planned jointly between myself and Hazel. I think I learned as much as Hazel from the exercise! This was my second experience of planning at Wivenhoe and it did't make it any easier. The campus and marsh are not technically challenging for the senior courses and to take the courses to Wivenhoe Woods involves 1K+ of dead running each way - which is too high a percentage of each course other than blue and brown. On the other hand the absence of a good variety of line features makes it difficult to plan the junior courses. Nevertheless I hope you all enjoyed the day - despite the efforts of vandals who removed three controls before the event (one of which mysteriously reappeared - in the wrong place - during the event).
This event would not have happened but for the really great efforts of Martin Sellens ( who dealt with much needed map corrections), Andrew Cordle ( our IT guru who made electronic map changes and dealt with the map printing) and especially Brian Daniel - the controller - whose contributions were simply wonderful. The experience of all three was invaluable. Finall a thank you to Colin and Lyn West and Dave Birkett for their help with the SI preparation and results.
Controller's Comments - Brian Daniel (HAVOC)
Thank you to Martin Sellens for updating the map at short notice and to Andrew Cordle for managing to provide overprinted maps for all competitors. That removed the risk of errors in copying map corrections and courses incorrectly, particularly on the junior courses. The White and Yellow courses were harder, in practice, than would be the case when a well defined path network is available, given the nature of the area and the use of alternative line features. Overall, Clive and Hazel provided a good range of courses, given the limitations of the area. The good number on the Blue course seemed to enjoy the experience and even managed to find more route choice than the Planner(s) had expected. I hope you enjoyed the bluebells too.
