The old club tent at the String Course ... |
... and the new club tent? |
It was with some trepidation that I drew back the curtains at 7 am on Sunday morning. There was a light scattering of snow but it was sleet/drizzle that was descending from the heavy sky. Snow will be all gone by 10 am I announced and got on with the business of getting the show on the road sparing a thought for Martin, Kevin and John already out in the forest. But I wouldn’t have believed that we would have glorious sunshine by 10 am. I was even removing layers of fleece. I hope you all enjoyed your run and the technicalities of Roman Valley despite the mud. There were a few minor glitches mostly with getting used to the new start system but overall I felt it worked well. The Mazda trailer was a delight to have as a base. My thanks to Steve for organising this along with all the SI side of the event. As usual Stragglers rose to the occasion and I had plenty of volunteers who worked hard on the day. My thanks to all of them, to Julia and Steve for handling the entries and to Andrew for producing the maps.
Lost Property: 2 plastic control description holders, one containing written descriptions for Course 11 (JM/W3, Orange) and the other Course 9 (M75S/W60S/W65S/W70S/W75S). Contact Lyn West on 01206 322905 or lynwest.ghh@tesco.net
Particular thanks to John Ward for his sensitive and thorough controlling. If the event was a success (and I hope you felt that it was), it was due in no small measure to his advice and attention to detail. He seems single handedly to be quality controlling East Anglian orienteering at present and we all owe him a debt of gratitude.
At the risk of sounding like an Oscar winner with all these thanks, a second vote of appreciation to Kevin for putting out and retrieving controls. Every planner should have an assistant to make these tasks manageable, particularly in the shorter days of winter, and it was great that Hilary, Katie and Alex also pulled in controls so we could all get home at a reasonable hour.
Thanks (the last one) for coming. Hope you had a good run and found the courses sufficiently challenging.
Areas with current forestry operations will always cause more than their share of problems to mappers and planners, and Roman Valley was no exception. Added to the ongoing disruption was the fact that the last edition of the map needed considerable updating, and this had not been possible in advance of planning this event. It is much to the credit of Martin and Kevin that they produced such a detailed and accurate map at the eleventh hour! Their courses utilised the more technical areas of the map well, and interspersed the close navigation with energy sapping runs. From the comments I heard, few people had realised the high standard of orienteering and diversity of terrain the area has to offer, which probably explains why the times for many competitors were longer than expected despite the relatively short course lengths. The event’s organisation ran smoothly when once the Start settled down, and it must be remembered that the ‘half hour blocks’ of entrants was experimental. Several valuable lessons were learnt which will help other clubs trying the technique for themselves. On behalf of all competitors, I would like to thank Martin and Kevin for their exceptionally hard work in the run-up to the event, to Lyn, Steve and all their helpers for their efficient organisation, and not least to the EAOA Junior Squad whose food and drink seemed to comfort even those who ‘mucked-up’ a control or two!
