Having avoided the job of organiser, preferring the role of planner, for the last ten years I was caught during an unguarded moment and agreed to organise the event. My first thought when reality struck was ‘What exactly does an organiser do?’ Fortunately the answer is fully laid out on the SOS website and people were more than willing to give the advise that I needed. If like me you have avoided this role, give it a go. It really is not that bad and of course without an organiser the event cannot take place.
Thank you to all those who helped on the day to make my job easy and stress free. Despite the potential problem of parking I had no worries throughout due to the generous offers of help freely given. Especial thanks go to Tony Biggs of Havoc for the loan of the generator and his help with the SI programme that allowed all SOS helpers to have a run. Also to Brian Daniels whos’ patient, thorough work as controller was invaluable.

We were unable to use the new northern section as much as we would have liked, due to the groundworks making tough going over the exposed soil. This meant only the longer courses venturing there, whilst all the other courses were in the more familiar southern Parkland. Even here, some long on-going drainage work required a map-correction for the Orange course.
Thanks to our controller, Brian Daniel of HAVOC for his calm, efficient approach, when sorting out the problems experienced with the control boxes, and to Kevin Machin, who as SOS Mapping Officer, printed all the maps and description sheets, from OCAD8 files.
You may have wondered about the reason for all the soil disturbance at Hylands Park. This is partly the result of extensive water & sewage pipe-laying work in preparation for future scout jamborees, and partly the result of well intentioned but misguided attempts to restore the land to the planned 'Repton' landscape of the early 19th century, which has led to the clearance of some copses including the trees surrounding the long lake. Now, from the house, you have uninterrupted views of 'Repton' style parkland and the industrial estate the other side of the Writtle bypass. This is progress. (It's all right, I'm a disgruntled local resident!) Over 400 mature trees have been removed, including some sponsored trees in the now-defunct arboretum. Thanks to John and Jenny Collyer for updating the 'new' map accordingly and for planning a good set of courses through and around all this chaos. We thought that the pipeline 'earthwall' in the SW of the park would have disappeared by the time of the event - hence the single map correction.
We had a bit of a SportIdent 'moment' on the day, which resulted in all the SI boxes being reprogrammed in the car park part way through the control setting. Sorry for anyone confused by the two controls (127 & 128) whose SI boxes had different numbers visible on the top - my mistake.
Finally, on behalf of the competitors, I would also like to thank Geoff Pye and the SOS organisational team for their contribution to a good event, despite the wind and hail ! The overprinted maps prepared by Kevin Machin were excellent.
