This was first attempt at planning a course and I chose an area well known to me. There has been extensive development in this area over the last few years and the map available to me was obviously several years old! As I am fairly computer-illiterate and unfamiliar to the computer programme available I decided to manually add (and take away) many footpaths and roads from this map. It would have been too time-consuming to use a computer programme to do this job. My apologies for this.
We had a few newcomers to orienteering at this event, including 3 A-Level students and their teacher. Most competitors were not SOS members.
The courses seemed to be enjoyable by most; I guess the mild weather, the spring blossom and the light nights contributed to their enjoyment.
There were a couple of controls which caused confusion, particularly where there were two (or three!) hydrants in close proximity to each other – I didn’t want to make the course too easy! Quite a few people had time penalties for missed or wrong controls. It was pleasing to see people discussing the course after they had finished.
Thanks to everyone who attended and, in particular, thanks to Chris, who gave me invaluable help and advice with the planning and production of the map and gave me support and help at the event.
With thanks to our volunteers Rachael Barford, David Lumby, Colin and Lyn West, John Allen, Eddie Banks, and Sue Waller Toyne we have now completed the last of the Mid-Week Winter Series. Congratulations must go to both Lyn and Colin who finished as joint league winners for the Long Course, and to John Adams for the Short Course. I think the events have proved good fun and helped to introduce some newcomers to our sport whilst giving others the opportunity to learn and acquire the necessary planning and organiser skills we need within the club. So well done to all and note Lyn is busy trying to recruit volunteers for the forthcoming Summer Series. We are happy to help if you would like to give it a go.
