The weather was dry, but possibly a little too warm, and many sweated and wilted in the heat; but everyone made it back and virtually all with a smile on their face. This has been a huge undertaking for me, producing my first urban map (which takes much much longer to produce than a forest map!) and then planning my first urban event as well. I don’t think I will be doing both again! Phil Halford was a steadying influence, encouraging me from the side lines, gently reminding me when I should have produced the next set of courses or updated map. He is a very patient man and I am thankful for that. It is always difficult to find control points that are not on the main routes that are not going to upset the residents. I discovered that a lot of the recent housing development in the centre is considered ‘private’ and I am sorry that a few competitors were challenged or shouted at in a part of town which is definitely not private to foot traffic.

Thanks also to JP and his team for the excellent and efficient manner with which the day’s tasks were undertaken and completed. It was JP’s first go at organising an event and it was a baptism of fire – there was just about everything in it, he did a great job and thanks to Andrew and Eddie for assisting in when JP was struggling. Thanks particularly to Eddie for finding good parking and an event centre close by with great facilities.

The late drama was the closing of the footpath linking the church to the quayside which was a critical route. Fortunately the workmen finished their work and on Saturday some ‘helpful’ people broke through the barriers and all was well. One last word to the keen types who are used to extraordinary challenges. When on an urban map, a boundary is marked as ‘Uncrossable’ – that is not meant to be a challenge! It means ‘Do Not Cross’. I know in other events competitors have been disqualified for attempting to cross. It can mean that it is physically impossible, but it can also mean that the landowner doesn’t want you on the other side of the boundary.

A personal thank you to JP and to Phil for their work behind the scenes, and their assistance to me. A wonderful team effort. Also to all those who made the effort to travel to Maldon, which I think is a little jewel on the East coast. I hope you enjoyed your day out.
