Organiser’s Report

Welcome Back To Orienteering! Our first tentative steps with this mid-week event. It was gratifying that we had a good turnout with 30 people participating on the evening. Given the very hot weather (still 32C at 6pm) it was good that no-one suffered from heat exhaustion and almost everyone who had pre-entered were able to run. Thank you to participants for your positive feedback about the courses. My aim was to present good levels of challenge for ‘rusty’ orienteers with route choice and to take advantage of the many green spaces and foot-paths in the area. Congratulations to the most of you that did not fall for my one or two evil-planner’s traps!

The use of fire hydrant signs is always a compromise, but it hugely simplifies the organisation. The long course sign for control 5 stuck to a lamp post was of poor quality, so I have decided not to penalise those who wrote down the number of the lamp post instead of the hydrant. You were there!

The CoViD precautions seemed to work reasonably well, so thank you to everybody for social distancing and sanitising.

Many thanks to Chris for handling the whole pre-entry process and to Chris, Lyn and Colin for their help on the night. Also to Roger and Taylor for proving the courses for me the previous week.

I look forward to running in the 2nd of the series at Chelmer Village in two weeks.

Eddie
