What a scorcher!

Magnificent day but tough in the heat. Everyone seemed to enjoy the mix of park and urban terrain. Our apologies for the slightly delayed start but hopefully it was worth the wait. We had some small hiccups with the computer systems and producing the results but after much head scratching it was sorted.

Our thanks to the park authorities for their cooperation and allowing us to host the event at Great Notley Country Park. Also, my sincere thanks to the small army of volunteers without who it could not happen.

I hope you enjoyed the courses and that the map did its job adequately, especially in the newly mapped village portion. (You can blame me for both!) The country park seemed to provide a good level of challenge with several controls needing surprisingly accurate navigation. I tried to use the greener bits for the controls in the village on the harder courses. Also limiting the physical difficulty on the short green compared with the slightly less technical light green.

The undergrowth had really shot up during the planning process and even in the last ten days since taping the controls. Hopefully this did not hide the controls or block the paths too much. Secateurs proved to be an indispensable tool in hanging out the kite to control 115 (distinctive tree). Control 120 (re-entrant) was sited at an unmarked minor path junction, but both path and control kite had almost disappeared in a sea of long grass.

Many thanks to Peter Woods (WAOC) for his patient support on the day and his excellent and speedy comments during the planning process.

Eddie and Chris deserve great credit in putting this event in place at short notice following unexpected non-availability of the venue originally intended, especially as this involved creating a new map to include the village as well as the county park. Any worries I might have had that the planning process might be a bit fraught, given the tight timescales, quickly evaporated when I saw Eddie’s map and draft courses. The course lengths were planned towards the upper end of the recommended range on the basis that the terrain is runnable and not intrinsically technical, so you will just need to forgive us for making you run all that way in such hot weather. From speaking to finishers at download and looking at the results later, Eddie evidently succeeded in providing appropriately challenging courses, even to those familiar with the area.
