Regional Colour coded event incorporating ESSOL
Hockley Woods

Final Results
Using the base at Belchamps Scout Activity Centre made my job easy this time round. Having access to toilets, electricity, tables, chairs, ample car parking and the (not too leaky) marquee meant a happy Organiser. The Centre staff did a sterling job with the car parking, leaving the willing band of Club volunteers to focus on the more technical orienteering jobs. Even the rain held off until the last competitor was scurrying back from the finish.
I only heard compliments about the courses, so am extremely grateful to the hard-working Planners Clive and Nina for all the hours they put in, top quality as usual. Our Controller Janet showed multi skills throughout the day, and was of course as helpful as ever.
However, the event would not have been able to run without the the initiative shown by Emma in the car park, Geraldine and John at the Start, Eddie with his superior knowledge of clocks, the helpful Mrs Banks, all four Bowie-Brittons who were so organised at Registration, Julie with the enquiries and first aid, not to mention the delicious cakes, Alex with his technical knowledge (thank goodness!), David and Chris who approached the computers with not too much trepidation, and Geoff in the woods, plus Tony who ensured a smooth handover of equipment at the end. Everyone contributed to a successful event, and I would like to thank you all (and if there’s anyone I’ve forgotten, then I do apologise).
Planners - Clive Tant and Nina Tant
One cannot hope to begin to produce good courses in an area with undergrowth like Hockley unless you have a good map and Kevin Machin deserves much praise for the substantial updates the map required and for his interpretation of the undergrowth. We hope we went some way to do justice to Kevin’s work.
Our controller Janet Biggs is always a pleasure to work with; her contributions are invaluable – even those beyond her role as controller! The new location for assembly boosted the Hockley event in so many ways and Rachel, with a very small team of helpers, did a grand job.
If you enjoyed Hockley as much as we enjoyed planning, tell your friends and come back again next time!
Controller - Janet Biggs (HAVOC)
I will reiterate Clive’s comments regarding Kevin’s map updates. As I managed to get through the areas of “single screen” bramble when checking the control sites I thought the majority of competitors would manage as well. If Clive had avoided those areas then we would not have had much of an event. As it was, most of the comments we received were very favourable. Clive, assisted by Nina, did well with the courses so I only needed to make a small number of suggested changes. He also did well by retrieving a control which had been vandalised just before the control collectors went out.
It was good to have the Belchamps Activity Centre for car parking and their facilities which Rachel worked hard to organise. Certainly worth going back there and to Hockley Woods, perhaps in the Spring before the brambles have taken too much of a hold?
