Overview

This is a score event, where you can visit the controls in any order. Controls 10-19 are valued at 10 points, 20-29 at 20 points, and 30-39 at 30 points, control 40 is valued at 40 points - these are all fire hydrants. There are two courses, Long & Short. 

The Maprun penalty for running this event is 30 points per part minute late back. If you are running this in the 2 weeks after 18th February, your penalty will be adjusted to 10 points per part minute late back (as per the event run on 18th Feb 2026).

The start and finish control is on the small green at the entrance to the car park of the the pub.

Directions / Parking

If using the pub facilities, then a car park is available at The Fox & Raven pub, Barnes Mill Road, Chelmsford, CM2 6NL. Otherwise there is plenty of street parking nearby (opposite the pub, in Beeleigh Link), or even in the nearby retail park.

Safety Notes

Participation is at your own risk. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather conditions.  There may be dog walkers, cyclists, electric scooters or residents on pavements and footpaths – be aware and give them priority. Some paths may be uneven, paving slabs may be broken and surfaces may be slippery. 

As with any street orienteering participants will be required to cross numerous roads and you are asked to take due care and attention at all times.  

Dependant on route chosen, it may be necessary to cross Chelmer Rd (a 40mph dual carriageway) using the subway tunnel & pedestrian crossing. These are shown as mandatory crossing points on the paper map, but not the electronic version. For fairness and safety, please do not attempt to cross the road other than at the specified locations
