Twilight Series No.1
The Hospital Arms, Lexden Road, Colchester
Wednesday 4th September 2024 6:30 – 8:00 pm
These are all Score events using MapRun. There was a SHORT 40min & LONG 60min both using the same map (1:10000) which worked fine.
Over 30 competitors turned up to test themselves on various terrains; open country, suburbia and city under daylight/twilight conditions. Good to see many newcomers.
The weather was slightly inclement with just a sprinkling of rain and moderate temperature so a quite comfortable evening for a run and socialising afterwards outside.
The pub was very welcoming; we set-up outside on the pavement which helped to create a convivial social gathering afterwards. There was many a discussion over route choice especially being a score event.
Credit to our HAVOC comrades who mostly had travelled a fair distance through the traffic to attend.
We look forward to event No.2 hosted by HAVOC at Brentwood South in two weeks time.
Many thanks for attending,
John Allen & Tim Hull

Map / Terrain
Open Orienteering Map style. 1:10,000
Download the course onto the Maprun app by clicking on ‘Select Event' in the app, and following the menu path UK > Essex > tba
The course map will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at Registration on the night. (Note – you do not need the PIN number to run using a Garmin watch). There are no written answers required with MapRun and your result will be automatically downloaded when you finish. However, if the app doesn't register your visit, then you need to record the lower number on the H sign, or other reference as directed. The full procedure will be explained at Registration.
Note, that if a control is missed then the software will show your result as Mispunch, but in the official results we will add the usual 5 minute penalty for a missed or incorrect control. Please ensure you notify the organiser that you have finished, so that safety checks can be completed.
If you are unable or prefer not to use MapRun, you are still welcome to take part by completing the control sheet with pen or pencil (N.B. this is a slower method). With this approach, timing will be manually by a traditional clock, and written answers will be checked as per previous events. If you are not using MapRun, then please bring a pencil to mark the control card and a map bag if wet.
Course Information
The event will have Long and Short courses using the same map but with different time limits. Runners on the Long course will have 60 mins, and those on the Short 40 mins. The aim is to visit as many controls as possible and return to the finish in the time allowed. Points scored per control will be 10, 20 or 30 and indicated as such on the map legend
Number of controls visited, specific order and route choice are all up to the individual competitor.
Controls are generally fire hydrant ‘H’ signs (lower number) some of which may be hand made.
