Event report
The first event in the Summer Series got off to a good start. The weather was kind to us and it was very pleasant sitting in the garden enjoying the excellent beer while you all ran. I hope you enjoyed the beer afterwards.
Essex Stragglers are keen to run a few events using standard orienteering maps and I hope you enjoyed the variation and for the long course a chance to orienteer in the country park. I tried to get the short course into the park as well but there wasn't enough distance. It would have been a fairly straight run there, a couple of uninteresting controls and back out. I decided to plan a more interesting route in Notley Village which is a delightful estate with plenty of green and lots of footpaths/cycleways for interesting route choice. I decided to hang kites in the country park although with maprun they aren't strictly necessary. However, as a number of runners are inexperienced, I felt it better to have the kites in place. If your phone didn't ping and there was no kite, you were in the wrong place! As it happens the only mispunch was an experienced orienteer! I also hope you enjoyed the view from the statue. That was the last kite that I hung and I took the time to admire the spectacular view over the Essex countryside.
Well done to those that battled through the traffic to get to the event and I hope those that didn't make it get chance to run their course on catch up which is open for 2 weeks after the event. On a sober note, the accident that caused the closure on A120 resulted in the death of a motorcyclist which puts the inconvenience into perspective.
Congratulations to Seb on Long and Eddie on Short for taking the 100 points. But there is a long way to go. Finally, thank you all for coming and see you at the next event on April 30th.

Courses will use roads and paths in Great Notley with hydrants as controls.
The Long course will enter Great Notley Country Park with controls located on features specified in control descriptions and identified with orange and white control kites.
Course Information
Long 6.0k 22 controls
Short 3.4k 11 controls
This is a line event, where you are expected to visit the controls in the correct order. Depending on your route choice, you may pass controls en-route to your destination, however, you must still visit all of the controls in the correct order.
It is useful to download the course you need before you arrive, download the course onto the MapRun app by clicking on ‘Select Event' in the app, and following the menu path UK > Essex > Great Notley
The course map will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN at Registration on the night. You do not need the PIN to run using a Garmin watch.
Your result will be automatically downloaded when you finish. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. If the app fails to register your visit to a control, you need to note the lower number on the H sign or code on kite. If a control is missed then the software will show your result as Mispunch, but in the results we will add the usual penalty for a missed or incorrect control.
