Planner’s Report for Admiral’s Park event – 10/05/2023

Thank you to everyone for taking part in the Admiral’s Park event. We hope you enjoyed it.

Despite the dire weather forecast and storms the night before, we escaped with only a smattering of rain, which was a relief.

There were 38 runners in total, which included several locals, youngsters and relative newcomers to the sport. Fastest times were John, Denise and Lee on the Short Course and Chris Prince on the Long Course. Well done!

As a very recent returnee to orienteering after a 30 year break, I had considered an ‘old school’ event, providing participants with a red pen to copy control locations from a master map, onto their non-waterproof and unmarked map. Given the forecast of wet weather, the use of pin punches rather than a SIAC was probably enough nostalgia for a single evening. Perhaps another time.

Thank you to everyone that helped and made the event possible, including Jo Sylvester at Chelmsford City Council, plus the Straggler stalwarts: Steven, Kevin, Colin and Lyn, John and Geraldine. Finally a huge thank you to Chris Childs for the many hours he spent guiding me, updating the maps and improving my ideas, sacrificing his own competitive run.
