EA League & EA Championships
Regional level event
Explanation of Event levels
Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

Planner’s Comments
I hope you enjoyed the event; either the weather (thankfully not as hot as Saturday), the forest, or the extra competition of the EA Champs.
Writtle forest allows for TD5 control sites and legs, something that isn’t always possible in the region’s areas, and I was keen to utilise this. Hopefully, you found the courses challenging and fun. The bracken was truly growing by the day, and some areas that had no bracken when I tagged sites (e.g. #125 on Brown & Blue) now had 6 ft tall fronds.
There was one surprise when hanging controls, which was a metal tower (+25 ft tall and weighing several hundred kgs) had mysteriously moved approx. 75m east from the mapped/tagged location. As this feature was used as a control site on the White course only (2 competitors), the Controller and I thought it would be easiest to explain the change, and other pointers on the course, directly to those White course competitors at the start. Unfortunately, one competitor didn’t receive this info, so I apologise for this.
Thanks to all the helpers on the day, especially those who stayed at the end to bring everything back in. Thanks to David for organising, Graham for controlling, and Eddie for arranging the new parking location.

Controller’s Comments
Well done to all SOS members for putting on a successful event in an Essex forest that challenges navigation. In particular well done to Ian for planning (his courses gained many positive comments) and David for organising (very efficient). The car park location was an excellent find, meaning shorter walks to the start and back from the finish than in previous events held at Writtle. The weather behaved with plenty of sunshine but I'm sure the shade of the forest was appreciated. The White and Yellow courses proved difficult to plan as the lack of a distinctive path network meant other line features had to be used. In the end the courses worked and the competitors on those courses all got round. Thanks to all those who competed and hopefully the majority of you enjoyed the area and courses. A final well done to all those who became EAOA champions on the day.
