Organiser’s Report

Thank you all for coming to tonight's event. I hope you enjoyed it. Good to see so much discussion of routes after the event, helped no doubt by the fact that you could see your GPS tracks. Sorry for the slightly longer courses, but I wanted to use both bits of woodland and the only real way to do this was to extend the running length a little. Hope it wasn't too bad. Everyone got round (apart from one phone that ran out of power), although I understand there were some troubles in the forest and up by 5 and 6 on the long, where I missed the fact that the route line obscured some roads. Sorry for that and any other vagaries of the mapping. There were a few additional paths in Norsey Woods which weren't mapped - I added a lot but obviously missed some. Where MapRun has indicated a miss punch but I can see from your track that you were close then I have credited a visit. There were a couple where I couldn't really see how the track (even if the GPS was out a bit under the tree cover) was close enough to the control to realistically think you were in the right place. Hopefully you were and you wrote down the answer as indicated on the map, and I can credit you with the visit. Just let me know.

All in all, I thought the use of MapRun was fairly successful - if you have any comments then please let me know.

MapRuns will be available along with all the other HAVOC courses from the series on the HAVOC website. There is also a selection of other courses - both street and hybrid, available on HAVOC and SOS websites. Don't forget your 50 point MapRun bonus for attempting an Essex MapRun during the series.

Next event is in Colchester, on Tuesday 19th July.

We are going to run this event using the MapRun software. Therefore, please, if possible, use a smartphone (or Garmin watch) and ensure you have latest version of MapRun (MapRun6) installed and the course is downloaded to your phone/watch before you arrive.

Details of how to obtain a copy of the app and how it works can be found here.
There is also a HAVOC user guide here.

Download the course onto the app by clicking on ‘Select Event', in the app, and following the menu path UK > Essex > Billericay North

The course map will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at Registration on the night. There are no written answers required with MapRun and your result will be automatically downloaded when you finish. If the app doesn't register your visit then you need to record the lower number on the H sign. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. Note, that if a control is missed then the software will show your result as Mispunch, but in the official results we will add the usual penalty for a missed or incorrect control. Please ensure you notify the organiser that you have finished, so that safety checks can be completed.

If you are really unable to use MapRun, you are still welcome to take part by completing the control sheet with pen or pencil but be aware that this is a much slower method. With this approach, timing will be manually by a traditional clock, and written answers will be checked as per previous events.

Controls are fire hydrant ‘H’ signs - there are a couple of handmade signs in the wooded part of the course. If you are using MapRun then you will not need to record answers on a control card. Otherwise you need to record the lower number on the H sign. Please bring a pen to mark the control card and a map bag if wet.
