Event report
Another successful event. It was cold but thankfully dry. Thank you for the appreciative comments. The two housing estates provided plenty of route choice through the streets and alleyways. I opted for short legs to keep you twisting and turning. Unfortunately there was a dead run for the long course to link between the two estates (the short course only visited the first estate). Apologies to those who tried to go across the open and encountered a high fence. I hadn't realised you could get into the open area. I only saw the track!
Galleywood Common is hard enough to navigate in daylight so we did try to discourage direct navigation across it advising runners to stick to the outside tracks. Looking at the traces in maprun, it appears that most people took the advice.
It was great to see a number of new faces. Some of the less experienced got value for money in the time they spent out on the course but all came back with smiles. I hope you did enjoy your run and will be back for more. I think for the first time on the night, we had more runners on the short course than the long. The Horse and Groom is a familiar venue for trail runners and as always they made us very welcome.
Congratulations to Marc Owen and Seb Parris who posted fastest times on short and long respectively and also scored the full 100 points. On the short course, defending champion Dave Game has inched clear with Mel Sirett in 2nd place having dropped a few points and Joe Harwood in 3rd. Seb is top of the table on the long but less than 10 points behind are Lyn West and Simon Fowler. With 7 events still to go, there is all to play for.
Thank you all for coming.

Miscellaneous
This event uses MapRun software. Please use a smartphone or Garmin watch and ensure you have the latest version of MapRun installed on your phone. Information about Maprun is available at www.stragglers.info/info/virtual-orienteering-courses. There is also a user guide on the HAVOC website
It is useful to download the course you need before you arrive, download the course onto the app by clicking on ‘Select Event' in the app, and following the menu path UK > Essex>Galleywood 2024 The courses are:
Long - Galleywood 2024 Long
Short - Galleywood 2024 Short
The course map will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at Registration on the night. You do not need the PIN number to run using a Garmin watch.
Your result will be automatically downloaded when you finish. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. If the app fails to register your visit to a control, you need to note the lower number on the H sign, or lamp post number. If a control is missed then the software will show your result as Mispunch, but in the results we will add the usual penalty for a missed or incorrect control.
If you are unable to use MapRun, you are still very welcome to take part by completing the control card with pen or pencil, but be aware that this is a slower method. You will be timed by clock, and written answers will be checked. Please bring a pen to mark the control card and a map bag if wet.
