Planner's Report
It was good to welcome some new faces last night for this the first of the SOS-HAVOC 'summer' series. Turnout overall was 13 on the short and 25 on the long course. 3 people decided to change from long to short after realising that the actual distances would be around 40%+ further than the straight-line distances. Optimum route for the short was 4.5km and for the long 8.0km.
I tried to maximise the amount of footpaths on the routes, and give some varied route choice, but could not avoid crossing some busier roads.
The newly pedestrianised area of Braintree town centre seemed to pose a particular challenge. The wiser heads slowed down and carefully read the maps here! Some later runners encountered locked gates at the George Yard shopping centre. Fortunately, everybody found a way to escape and get to the finish safely!
Congratulations to Roger Gooding on the long course and to Melanie Sirett on the short course: both fastest overall and on handicap.
