Report

The 2025-26 Winter series got off to a good start with 27 runners on the night. The rain held off until after the last finisher. The technology worked with only one "mispunch" where the track showed the control site had been visited. The landlady at The Retreat was very welcoming and commented on the lively buzz in the bar. The pies were delicious.

We have been looking to get into the new Towerlands estate for a while. Building is ongoing and it is going to be an extensive development to which we will no doubt return at a future date. Panfield Lane that bounds the area on the west has a nasty bend which we didn't want runners using in the dark so opted for a line event to feed runners across safely rather than use a score format. Someone did suggest we could have put out of bounds crosses on the road but as at least 2 runners ignored the out of bounds crosses on the south of the map, that wouldn't have been a safe option! These runners came up against an uncrossable gate barring their way and had to retrace their steps!

Allen posted the fastest time on the Long course and also earned the 100 points. Colin was fastest on the Short but Chris pipped him for 100 points. There's a long way to go so plenty of chance to improve on positions.

Thank you all for coming and hope to see you at a future event.
Lyn & Colin West

Miscellaneous

This event uses MapRun software. Please use a smartphone or Garmin watch and ensure you have the latest version of MapRun installed on your phone. Information about Maprun is available at www.stragglers.info/info/virtual-orienteering-courses. There is also a user guide on the HAVOC website

It is useful to download the course you need before you arrive, download the course onto the app by clicking on ‘Select Event' in the app, and following the menu path UK > Essex > Bocking 2025.
The courses are:
Bocking 2025 Long
Bocking 2025 Short

The course map will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at Registration on the night. You do not need the PIN number to run using a Garmin watch.
Your result will be automatically downloaded when you finish. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. If the app fails to register your visit to a control, you need to note the lower number on the H sign, or lamp post number. If a control is missed then the software will show your result as Mispunch, but in the results we will add the usual penalty for a missed or incorrect control.

If you are unable to use MapRun, you are still very welcome to take part by completing the control card with pen or pencil, but be aware that this is a slower method. You will be timed by clock, and written answers will be checked. Please bring a pen to mark the control card and a map bag if wet.
